Hello sunshine!

 

Wat een geweldigheid vandaag. In de zon, nietsen, een boek lezen, koffie drinken met mijn hospita, ijs eten met mijn hospita, mijmeren, peinzen, slapen... welcome back mister sunshine! You really make my day! And charley as well, die eigenlijk heel lief is, zolang ze niet 's morgens vroeg aan mijn deur zit te mauwen. 

 

Spring!

Ze voelde het voorjaar overal om zich heen, zelfs binnen in haar, en ze stootte een lange, doordringende vreugdekreet uit. Toen zei ze tegen Birk: "Zo moest ik de lente verwelkomen, anders zou ik uit elkaar gebarsten zijn. Hoor eens! Hoor je de lente?"
Ze stonden een tijdje zwijgend naast elkaar te luisteren naar het gekwetter, het gesuis, gezoem, gezang en gemurmel in hun bos. In alle bomen, watertjes en struiken zat leven. Overal was het frisse, wilde lentelied te horen. "Ik voel de winter uit me wegstromen," zei Ronja. "Ik ben straks vast zo licht dat ik kan vliegen."

The Green Project

Deze blog is toe aan vernieuwing. Als ik zo mijn oude posts bekijk zie ik dat het wel wat persoonlijker mag. Ik heb besloten om nog meer foto's te posten die ik zelf heb gemaakt, foto's die mooi zijn om de foto zelf, of foto's van leuke momenten en inspirerende DIY-projecten. Aangezien het bijna lente is, hierbij mijn eerste 'project'. Let's call it 'The green project'. Gisteren heb ik dille, basilicum en peterselie gezaaid. Volgende week komen daar nog een aantal kruiden bij. Ik ben best wel een kookfanaat, en in de keuken zijn kruiden natuurlijk onmisbaar. Het lijkt me geweldig om fijn veel kruiden voorhanden te hebben komende zomer. Bij de HEMA verkopen ze veel (basis)soorten kruiden. De Nieuwe Tuin heeft wat apartere soorten, naast de gewone soorten. Enfin. Gisteren met mijn regenlaarzen (jawel) naar buiten, gewapend met een zak potgrond, kruidenzaden en bakjes.

Ik ben zeer benieuwd wat er opkomt! Hopelijk doen ze het net zo goed als deze vorig jaar, die er toen zo uit kwamen te zien. Uiteindelijk komen ze dan in een mooi houten wijnkistje, ongeveer zoals hier is gedaan.

Joel Sternfeld. Color Photographs Since 1970.

Yesterday I finally visited FOAM in Amsterdam with Nadine. It was such a lovely day! But first, let me tell you something about the exhibitions we visited.
The one that impressed me most was the retrospective exhibition of Joel Sternfeld (1944, New York). He's one of the pioneers of color photography. 'A constant factor in his work is his native land America, its inhabitants and the traces left by people on the landscape. With a subtle feeling for irony and an exceptional feeling for color, Sternfeld offers us an image of daily life in America over the last three decades.' There were more than hundred photos from ten different series.

This one is my favorite from the exhibition. The orange color of the pumpkins and the fire, the three poles in the foreground and the three bushes in front of the burning house. The fireman that looks as if he wants to buy a pumpkin and tries to find the biggest one...and last but not least the amazing color tones.
I was really surprised by the work of Joel Sternfeld, I've to admit his work was completely new to me. He's such a brilliant photographer. It was great to see photos from the 80s that were shot in color (back in the days, they mostly shot in black and white). If you have the chance, go to FOAM and see it for yourself!

Another exhibition we visited was the one called 'The Tribe', by Pavel Prokopchik (Russia, 1982). Pavel Prokopchik lives in The Netherlands since 2001 and has studied photography in Den Haag. Pavel Prokopchik has been spending several months living with a group of young people in Russia who have chosen an alternative lifestyle, away from politics and a materialistic society. Visiting FOAM was truly inspiring and -of course- I had my own camera with me. So on our way back to the train station, I made some photos of Amsterdam.

Zander Olsen, Treeline

Zander Olsen is the photographer of an ongoing series of constructed photographs rooted in the forest. These works, carried out in Surrey, Hampshire and Wales,involve site specific interventions in the landscape, ‘wrapping’ trees with white material to construct a visual relationship between tree, not-tree and the line of horizon according to the camera’s viewpoint. I think it is wonderful to see how the border between trees and the horizon fades.

Amsterdam

Last week I visited a friend in Amsterdam. It had not been to Amsterdam for quite a while and it was great to be there for two days. The only bad thing about staying there were the planes, that were constantly crossing the sky, preparing to land. Sounds like thunder. We had a great time together and on the next day, last tuesday, I visited The Hermitage. At the moment (sept 17th - march 16th 2012) they present a stunning collection from the Flemish art collections of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The three giants of the Antwerp School included: P.P. Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens. It was a beautiful exposition, a little crowded but enough space to explore the rooms.

The Hermitage is a lovely museum on the outside as well as on the inside.

Hello December

 Ten things I want to do in December:

* Finish all the books I'm reading (3 in total)

* Decorate my room for the christmas season (beginning of december)

* Find recipes for Happietaria, a temporary restaurant run by students, generating cash for an agricultural project in Uganda. I'm involved and helping in the kitchen. Really excited about it!

* Eat more fruit and veggies and vitamins that keep me healthy

* Study more

* Blog more

* Make more photos (and posting them)

* Visit a friend in Amsterdam (next week) and the Hermitage, where some great artwork of Rubens is exhibited

* Print photos and hang them on my wall

* Celebrating the birth of Jesus, and my own birthday with my family and friends :)

New Bike

Today I finally bought a bike. Traveling by bus every day (when I go to college) was tiring me more than enough. It's great to know I will never have to wait for the bus anymore. I was very happy when I found out this bike was for sale. It was very reasonably priced (60 euro) and it is in a great vintage condition. It was built between 1975 - 1985 by the famous Dutch bike factory Gazelle. When I went to college this afternoon I was so happy to feel the wind in my hair, the sunshine on my face! Just look at this beauty!

It's just great to see the details. I love my bike. Bikes are awesome anyway. In a city like Utrecht (were I study History of Art) many people use bikes every day. If you are bored, go to youtube and look for 'bikes utrecht'. You will be amazed to see the morning rush or the parking problems... I think one more will do no harm...

Capernwray Hall

Last summer I was lucky to stay for three weeks at the beautiful 19th century Manor House, Capernwray Hall. It's a great place in the north of England and has modern facilities (sauna and swimmingpool, too!). I worked as a volunteer during the summer, when they organise holidays (during the year it's a bible school, with students attending for half a year or a year). I'm quite sure I wrote about this before, just click at the word 'Capernwray Hall' in the right side bar if you want to read it.

Now it's getting winter quite rapidly, I suddenly really long to go back to those amazing three weeks last summer. I know it's impossible, but it was such a good time! They organise holidays again coming summer, I'm not sure if I will go work there another period yet... *thinking about it*. 

O, and some exciting news: I'm gonna write a blog article about Lomography! :D Coming soon!

Due to moving to another place I didn't post in the last few weeks. But I didn't leave this blog! Autumn has come and brought wind, rain and lots of inspiration with him. I will be posting about photography (which is the main subject of this blog), fashion, design and traveling. Follow my blog with Bloglovin if you like to get updates and new posts!

This postcard I found in an incredible shot in Rotterdam, near to the Boijmans- van Beuningen Musuem. I sent it to my family as a greeting card (and inspiration for a new haircut). The shop in Rotterdam I found by accident. It is called 'Voorlopig' and they have all sort of paper goods, books, cards, stamps and other very creative stuff. So if you visit Rotterdam, just have a look, It's absolutely worth it!
